MALDEN 375 : PRIYANKA MANICKA VASAGAM

More about the MALDEN 375 SWITCHBOX:
The “Malden 375 ” is a celebratory mural that bursts with vibrant colors and exudes a sense of joy and
vitality, reflecting the spirit of Malden’s diverse and thriving community.
Stretching across the length, the mural depicts scenes of everyday life in Malden like the – bike path,
community garden, children playing & mother/family walking with young children.
In the background are various colorful lines inspired by Malden native artist Frank Stella depicting the
orange line, commuter rails & Malden River path. As these paths intersect, I want to alternatively view
them as crossing paths for the diverse culture that Malden is proud of. The entire mural is set against
the backdrop of the lush Pine banks pine trees with stars sprinkled in homage to the Converse legacy.
The mural holds the tagline for Malden – “Strong past. Proud future” in the front. On the side
(preferably facing traffic) is the 375th-anniversary sign on the shining sun – which symbolizes a
source of happiness & hope. The woman pushing the stroller w/ a baby is a personal image
as I plant my roots & grow my family in Malden.
As viewers take in the mural, they are reminded of the countless opportunities and experiences that
Malden has to offer. From its bustling downtown to its serene parks and green spaces, the mural
encapsulates the essence of Malden and the vibrant community that is its cornerstone.
